Aging with Vernon

I made portraits with the Nobel-Prize winning economist, Vernon L. Smith, to visualize how he stays mentally sharp as a 97-year-old man. Smith likes to stay busy as he grows older. He still works eight hours a day, every day, both as a research professor at Chapman University and writing various articles and books, while continuing to exercise and get out into the world.

Two old railroad clocks, gifted by Vernon Smith’s father and grandfather, decorate the walls of Smith’s study next to a portrait sketch of his younger self at his Colorado Springs, Colo., home on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024.
